hey! I'm doing audio work atm so I can't really listen at the same time, but it's relaxing to watch you draw :-) sorry I can't react to what you say :s

yep indeed! I'm doing good, today's the first okay-weather-day in a while, something to celebrate

shinmera: unlucky... I hope it gets better for you! life always seems like a bumpy ride

shinmera: was wondering, how many hours do you get done on a good programming day? I have started measuring in the last few weeks... and on normal day i might get 1-2 hours of work done which is shocking
19:04:40
xavier
in general I think the 40h workweek is nonesense, most ppl can't work effectively 8h/day
19:08:19
pliskin
xavier: I wish... the problem is if one person asks for it, I feel like everyone else will want it too?

You should tell your boss to let you have a relaxing vacation of doing nothing in particular, Shin

we need to go back in time... and have a word with the guy who invented the 5day work week xD

isn't opengl a thing of the past now? I hear cool kids are onto that vulkan stuff and or those WebGPUs
19:19:53
xavier
but no, from what I understand, WebGPU is a badly named standard (ppl in the Rust community usually just say "wgpu") that attempts to be cross-platform, not just for the web
19:22:05

What's the thing about Rust anyways? It's like the "new big popular language" like Java and Python were back in the day.
19:22:50
xavier
idk, ppl like it I guess? I've used it for various projects, there are a lot of nice things, as well as a bunch of pain points. overall I like it

the main big deal is memory management, which is handled for you in a fast and deterministic manner

shinmera: i just wanted to know how the graphics stuff works... plan is to write a simple game and then a simple gui text editor
19:27:46
pliskin
shinmera: haha text editor because I kind of wanted to play around and see how to make an IDE with auto completion and shit... i'm actually doing it in common lisp (sbcl)
19:29:27
pliskin
shinmera: thanks, i'll try using something else for it! is there just too much junk to deal with for low level text stuff?
19:30:53

We do rich text document rendering into raster images at work. It's horrible. The company started with it in late 90's and it's still an on-going process to work on.

Just creating the automated tests to check that documents still render correctly after changes took years.

Thankfully I don't personally have to touch that stuff. Got a separate team for it.
19:36:41
pliskin
shinmera: i won't! i was expecting it to be a solved thing because we've been working with text forever
19:40:06
pliskin
shinmera: cool, thanks, will consider it! I've been slowly working my way through the learn-opengl stuff, so maybe after I get done with that.

D&D was fun today, by the way. They met a galeb duhr, a rock elemental of sorts. I decided to try to give it a speech pattern similar to Witcher 3's trolls. My players immediately wanted to adopt it.
19:45:15

Not particularly. My deliveries definitely could be better and I find it hard to re-gather my thoughts if anything goes off-script (as it usually does).

Depends on how you run your game. I use pre-made adventure modules so I have stories made by other people.
19:49:07

A lot of it is just copying things from popular media. I honestly should be writing things down as I run into fun stuff I could use.

I often thing "oh, I could use this!" and then never remember what the thing was.

One day I'll get to use Sundowner's speech from the prologue before he kills the prime minister.
