At least on the boots and trousers I think I have the colours in the right direction?
15:35:54
Miguel
looking at it from afar, i think it's not that the shadow is too warm, i think the light is just too cool. if you make it warmer, that should fix the shadows because it's all relative
15:36:26
Miguel
try using the same color on her jacket that you're using on the rim light on the rocks
15:41:23
Miguel
well, just make a new layer and scribble over the highlight with a solid brush set to the bright yellow on the rim light, see if it reads
15:47:26
Miguel
i think what you're going for in terms of exposure is closest to this painting https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ec/03/b6/ec03b69d358ea6fecbf44833fd8cecc4.jpg
15:48:30
Miguel
that's because it's exposed for shadow, and most of the story is told by what's in teh shadows
15:49:54
Miguel
this one has a bit more exposure (or is it less? i can't keep the terminology straight) https://i.pinimg.com/originals/3a/9e/53/3a9e539440ad7668c24c430327b6b9ba.jpg

what your'e doing already is pretty close i think, the reason it's better with a stronger light is because you want the lit areas much closer in value
15:51:11
Miguel
so the parts of her that are getting directly lit should be close to the rim light, and probably close in value to the distance too
15:52:30
Miguel
it's gotta be darker so that when you squint, it's closer to the clothes than to the sand

though I still have a lot of trouble figuring out when to push things to be more or less saturated
15:54:47
Miguel
i'd keep them at about the level of saturation you've got, and then use very saturated colors as accents that draw the eyes
15:56:31
Miguel
i'd also make the mountain and probably the far dunes more
hazy and blurred; with that distance and atmosphere there's no way its silhouette would be so sharply defined
15:56:33
shinmera
I feel like this shade should be redder and more saturated? feels kind of dead now.
15:57:39
Miguel
hm, give it a try. i think i might actually have gone for a a less saturated shade to make it cooler
16:01:54
shinmera
in the paintings you sent before it //looks// like there's plenty of strong reds in the faces

Miguel
here's some strong warm light and cool shadow https://image.shutterstock.com/z/stock-photo-lonely-european-man-in-sunglases-stands-in-desert-on-the-orange-color-dune-footprints-sunset-in-1141043648.jpg

i've been doing bouguereau studies the last few days and one thing i've learned is that you can get a lot of seeming vibrancy by just varying hues a little bit; i don't think his paintings ever used saturation past 40 except on the lips
16:06:18
Miguel
but generally the lesson i learned was to just try shifting the hue around and changing the saturation
16:06:34
Miguel
yeah i was doing some reproductions and couldn't figure out what shade of green he was using
