Was going to go out for a walk but holy heck this headache spiked in the past half an hour.

Trying to figure out which games to delete from this massive PSX rom dump so it can fit onto the remaining space of my Mister.

like, ECC is mostly used in server hardware, so size is not much of a concern. But I don't want to have a tower or rack. it's gotta be ITX
17:56:05
suntmc
you can forget about older stuff, as it's either hard to get (mostly MBs) or stupidly expensive for how old it is
17:56:29
suntmc
then, Intel has ECC support in all their current (and last gen) Core i chips, so 12th gen and 13th gen
17:57:11
suntmc
(note, the memory controller is built into the CPU, there's no good reason for normal Z790 boards to not support it, except intel says no)
17:57:54
suntmc
there is exactly one W680 ITX board. From AsRock Industrial. They don't sell it here. nor has anyone ever really seen one for purchase despite it having been released in march 2022
17:58:39
suntmc
Intel's new server platform with the W790 chipset replaces it, so there's little to no chance for these boards to still appear here
17:59:19
suntmc
then there's AMD. All their ryzen CPUs have ECC support since the first generation, which is pretty neat
18:00:43
suntmc
so, back to AMD. Their CPUs support ECC, but this depends on the MB manufacturer to 'enable' it, as the support is not enforced
18:01:15
suntmc
now, there's lots of AM4 boards where it just isn't clear if ECC actually works or if it's just 'supported' as in 'it boots, but does not make use of ECC'
18:02:18
suntmc
next is the fact that APUs from AMD, so CPUs with an integrated gpu (which i kinda need, as i'm gonna need the ONLY PCIe slot for something else) do not support ECC
18:03:49
suntmc
now, Ryzen 7000 also supports ECC, but apparently it's up to the MB manufacturers again to enable support for it
18:04:13
suntmc
Asus said they support it, but people say ECC functionality isn't enabled despite it being enabled in BIOS
18:05:19
suntmc
now AMD has released their AGESA bios 1.0.0.5 (like, a few weeks ago) which apparently fixed the ECC stuff and now it works even on ASRock boards despite them saying they don't support it. (But they have the option listed in the manual)
18:05:55

shinmera: i actually considered asking dalco, but since asrock industrial does not officially have any partners in switzerland, i thought it was kinda pointless
18:06:28
shinmera
 could just throw them an email about the ECC ISX in general. Maybe they know something.
18:07:36
suntmc
most people just don't bother with ECC and go consumer grade. like even most NAS from Synology and QNAP don't have ECC
18:09:07
suntmc
and at around 2000.- for the entire thing, it doesn't make much of a difference anymore
18:11:02
suntmc
but yeah, it'll probably take quite a while until i will actually consider buying anything
