Shinmera: re last night's hackery; if you want to see what it looks like, note that the time-override for it is in the URL instead e.g. https://european-lisp-symposium.org/2024/stream-calendar.html#2024-05-06T14:36

sorry for being kind of slow in that area. feel free to pawn things off on me. and for what it's worth, i don't have any issue with your bans, obviously.
19:40:11
Colleen
<shinmera> bike: thanks. I was about to depart a flight so I didn't have time to deal with it
19:44:30
Colleen
<shinmera> Either way I wouldn't mind banning holycow given their current attitude is pretty clearly "freeze peach idiot that probably wouldn't mind nazis sticking around"
19:45:50
Colleen
<shinmera> nor do I want to give the impression that I'm up for engaging in any sort of discussion about it
19:49:28
Colleen
<shinmera> Their previous egregious behaviour isn't giving a lot of confidence to believe they won't engage in this kinda nonsense again in the future, either
20:02:51
bike
yeah, the grandstanding is sort of obnoxious. always seems to be the nazi bans that bring out the pseudo libertarian types
20:04:31
Colleen
<shinmera> thank fuck for the "on topic" rule or that channel would be heck to moderate
20:06:52
Colleen
<shinmera> can't wait for whatever psycho comes next to try and frame me for organising a "cabal" or whatever because I talked to another mod in another channel
20:15:16
bike
oh, i didn't even know about that. that's just great. i just checked his twitter once after xach banned him and that was enough
20:18:13
SAL9000
organising a cabal? nah, "I got a second opinion, my fellow professional agreed with my judgement" :-)
20:20:52
Colleen
<shinmera> I seem to have some kinda smell to me because I do seem to attract unhinged weirdos more than the average netizen
20:23:05
SAL9000
in a way it's like tall poppy syndrome I guess, these sad people who can't make something cool themselves decide to cut others down instead
20:24:16
Colleen
<shinmera> Back on freenode I knowingly never took on mod role because I didn't want it
20:24:33
Colleen
<shinmera> I think on libera I got it because whoever made the channel knew me and just put me on there
20:24:46
SAL9000
in that regard I like how many places on irc have "invisible" mods, discord et. al. could learn from that
20:25:46
SAL9000
both reduces the lightning rod effect & lets the mods participate normally without "oh no, I can't disagree with the mods!!" effect
20:26:07
Colleen
<shinmera> on the other hand I think it's good to have a clear indicator of who to go to in case of trouble
20:26:21
Colleen
<shinmera> like, there's been fights on the channel before that I missed because I don't read it much anymore
20:27:47
Colleen
<shinmera> I willingly took mod on the matrix channel, but that's because it gets like two messages a week
20:28:54
SAL9000
on a more positive note... have you seen/used https://github.com/AirenSoft/OvenMediaEngine ? potential replacement for the nginx rtmp relay
20:30:08
SAL9000
I haven't tried setting it up myself yet but I used a friend's instance, it did ~1.1s roundtrip latency for a 4k30 stream
20:31:51
SAL9000
it supports the more modern protocols (SRT, WHIP) too, apparently they do a better job of handling bad connections
20:33:38
SAL9000
for offsite presenters we'd probably want to stick for jitsi I guess, unless they happen to know what they're doing with streaming
20:35:42
SAL9000
I was thinking of presenters who would be using obs->vcam->jitsi & switching to restreaming would mean less problems rather than more, but you're right
20:57:34
Colleen
<shinmera> it would be less parts if everyone did that, but if only some do, it's more parts in total
