loke: with what app does that happen to you? It happens to me with pharo launcher. I wrap the form with (max ... 0) as a stop gap measure but that doesn't seem like the proper fix to me

PuercoPop: It happens with Xterm at least. I haven't funny researched the problem yet, but I believe it happens when a window uses “snap” resize. Xterm, for example, adjusts its dimensions to be a multiple of the size of a character cell.

The problem is is that the inc hint calculation is buggered. It seems as though the increment hint can cause the window to grow larger, actually larger than the frame. And that causes the parent window (that holds the border) to be smaller than the contained window. That in turn causes the code to compute the border width to be negative, which triggers the crash.

I will take a look at the inc-hint computation to see what it's actually trying to do, but to be honest I'm not sure what the “correct” thing to do here is, and it's probably better to simply ignore it (which is what the variable does)
