the port isn't perfect, if the user wants more he/she will have to run it from sources. The binary only doesn't allow things like "reload"

Well, sounds like good compromise, similar to fbsd. User who wants easy maintenance can use port. User who wants more personalized control can build from sources. Availability of quick and easy option especially helps curious types who otherwise may be intimidated or otherwise unwilling to "roll their own", so to speak. Rock on!!

I've though about providing sources in the package and make a script running something (IIRC) (load "load-stumpwm.lisp") (stumpwm:stumpw) but it compiles files in the user, so it's a slow start for the first time and people may not want cached common-lisp files in their $HOME
