Good morning beach!

beach
So you're back. Congratulations!

I have little understanding of what happened - my guess is that I got tripped up while joining #lisp somehow, but that doesn't explain e.g what happened to LdBeth.
4:46:47
beach
What happened to ldbeth?
4:47:18
no-defun-allowed
Long ago, he couldn't get messages sent to IRC, and I think you witnessed that.
4:47:35
beach
Oh, yes, I vaguely remember.

Good morning splittist.

The good news is that the connection to the xserver (or xclient - knowing I always get them mixed up, I always get them mixed up) crashed (perhaps when the screensaver kicked in), so I have an excuse to avoid my excuse for avoiding what I ought to be doing.

Hello zacts.
8:55:59
beach
So it looks like I started the SICL project in August 2008. And FORMAT was the first module.
8:56:34
beach
But I have had several long periods of no activity.
8:58:24
zacts
beach: do you have a working version of sicil?
8:58:57
beach
Not an executable, no. But thanks to the bootstrapping technique, a lot of the code has been run and tested.
8:59:29
zacts
I like projects like this
8:59:43
zacts
I think a lot of creative ideas come from them.
9:00:06
zacts
I once was mentored by someone in #perl who had a project kind of like this
9:00:07
beach
Yes, as it turns out, we have generated a few good ideas over the years.
9:00:20
zacts
I forget the name of his project, but it was in perl
9:00:28
zacts
the nick was uri on #perl
9:02:45
zacts
beach: how familiar are you with multics?
9:03:32
beach
I used it for a couple of years, and I took all the classes by Honeywell-Bull. But I haven't worked on system code anything.
9:05:00
beach
What's the reason for your question?
9:06:15
zacts
beach: I'm curious because you've mentioned it here before, and I also have an interest in it via multicians.org and minix3.
9:06:42
zacts
I was surprised to learn how successful the project actually was/is.
9:06:55
zacts
and then I learned about some of the design ideas via multicians.org
9:08:08
beach
I see. Yes, it is one of the pioneering projects for time sharing and implementing an OS in a high-level language.
9:08:16
beach
Maybe not the first, but one of the first.
9:10:39
beach
Someone revived it and it is (or was at least) accessible with web access.
9:10:47
beach
Running in an emulator.
9:10:52
zacts
no, but I'd love to try it out.
9:11:13
beach
Even with an emulator, it is probably faster than the GE645. :)
9:11:24
zacts
I once ran minix and the hurd on bare metal though.
9:12:42
zacts
it'd be interesting to tinker with multics though. I also have heard of people running V5/6 UNIX in an emulator
9:12:50
zacts
but actually using it for certain tasks
9:13:41
zacts
anyway.. beach are you also familiar with the NetBSD RUMP anykernel?
9:13:58
beach
I think someone else mentioned it here, maybe.
9:14:25
beach
I probably looked a bit like it at the time, but not much more.
9:14:41
beach
What is the reason for *that* question? :)

9:22:32
beach
OK, so 2008-2013 were quite slow for SICL. 2016 and 2017 a bit sluggish. So I think it is fair to say that I have so far put in around 6 years of part-time work, so say 4 person-years. That's not too bad.
9:23:17
beach
Thanks. It is less than what it feels like. :)
9:24:02
beach
zacts: Why did you ask whether I am familiar with the RUMP kernel?
9:28:19
beach
... but that's just my own work of course.
9:28:32
beach
Bike has put in a few years as well.
9:29:53
beach
I should try to write up as much project history as I can recover.
