I wonder if Krystof's look was a combination of the colour treatment (washed-out blue is hardly energetic), the standard unflattering lighting of home videoconference setups (as opposed to the studio lighting and pancake makeup we've been conditioned to by decades of TV) and his deliberate style of speech. But, of course, 15 months of wuflu panic can't have helped anyone.

beach: although I agree there was a strange sort of Us v Them flavour baked into the implementation discussion (as though users were the enemy).

I don't think I've seen (or participated in, or scheduled) a panel discussion at a conference that was worth the time and talent devoted to it, though.

splittist: well, a panel discussion might involve less effort from panelists in total than would take one of them to prepare a talk… so «worth it» is a complicated matter.

Some people like to hear answers that do not sound carefully prepared! Especially for context/history/opinion topics

MichaelRaskin: I agree that from a participant and organizer perspective panels are a great thing. I just don't think they work from an audience perspective compared with a prepared talk. A garrulous grey-[hair/beard] reminiscing about the good old days can be fascinating, I agree.

splittist: as long as it's announced as a vague-topic panel, you know what to expect, and well, if it is enjoyable for large enough fraction, and lets people to find out some weird pieces of context…

MichaelRaskin: sure. I didn't meant to come off so cranky. It was interesting in a second-order way to see how different maintainers saw things.

Sure, if you want something which conveys useful information efficiently, talk might be it and panel discussion probably isn't. On the other hand, you could say that flipping through the slide deck PDF beats both listening a talk and reading the paper from efficiency point of view
