no-defun-allowed: I think your book needs a preface, which would play the same role as an abstract of an article, i.e. the second filter (the first being the title) for potential readers.

So the preface needs to contain some terminology, and an indication of the required background of readers.

Like, you use "dynamic environment". But is that an office with really perky colleagues, or as you later use the term, a geographical area with lots of wildlife?

So I think you need to determine which terms you assume the reader is familiar with (or briefly define them), and let the reader know which terms the book aims to explain.

So, I personally don't understand much of the introduction, but since I haven't been told what to expect, I don't know whether that's because I lack some knowledge, or because there are terms that have not been defined.

As splittist pointed out, it is not obvious that the reader does not have to know a priori what "social ecology" is.

As Pinker points out, the secret to good writing is to be able to imagine yourself in the situation of a reader who does not possess the knowledge that you, the writer, do, and to present what you know to the reader in an incremental way.
