magit for emacs makes it much better but i can understand not wanting to get deeper into git in any form

It is interesting (to me) that there are usually more actively maintained cl implementations than there are widely-used source-code managers.

splittist: If lisp was as popular as git I have no doubt that sbcl would be far more used than anything else, similar to how it is with git/svn/mercurial/etc

Extreme differences in popularity can unfortunately also stifle diversity because creating an alternative seems fruitless
