The only time I've ever been able to use slime+sbcl without any hitches whatsoever, was when I was on Arch.

Debian, and especially ubuntu, have always inevitably broken stuff with version mismatches that requires a bit of effort to get around manually.

someone on #lisp managed to run out of immobile space by creating ~256k keywords (at least as far as i can tell, that is the problem), if that is an interesting data point for sbcl devs

The only way I can think of where you could use that many keywords is if you're using SBCL as an database.
