froggey: Have you had anyone try Mezzano on VmWare?
14:24:03
froggey
no, but I'd be interested to know the result
14:25:10
Shinmera
VMWare says: the CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system.
14:25:35
froggey
that'll be a panic, the serial log should say what went wrong
14:25:35
Shinmera
mezzano shows: Starting system. Entry point is ff8cde49 sp is 00c05d89 info is 00100000
14:27:15
Shinmera
Not sure how to get that on VmWare, hold on.

14:30:52
Shinmera
vmware also has its own log that has things in it if you want that, too
14:31:47
Shinmera
Could also upload the vmx, I think you should be able to run that with the free VmWare Player.
14:33:24
froggey
can you try booting with the freestanding option? that should produce a more useful set of backtraces
14:34:03
Shinmera
I'm afraid I don't know what that means.
14:34:47
froggey
at the kboot boot menu there should be a "Mezzano - freestanding" option, pick that one
14:34:54
froggey
I assume you built this image yourself?
14:35:48
froggey
I think it should be the same...

14:38:41
froggey
ah, there we go. "Sector size: 0", that's weird
14:41:22
froggey
one sec... F1 got exciting for a moment
14:41:39
Shinmera
I'm in no rush at all :)
14:49:40
froggey
Shinmera: try going to the kboot shell (F10 at the menu) and booting with: mezzano "hd0,2" "freestanding" "no-detect"
14:50:00
froggey
this'll disable most hardware detection and should get it past that bit
14:50:39
Shinmera
It'd be nice if the menu lasted more than one second, clicking into the vm and inputting before it's gone is a bit tough.
14:53:05
Shinmera
Boot Error, incompatible video mode vga:80x25
14:54:16
froggey
I have forgotten how to use kboot...
14:54:42
froggey
you could try mounting the bootloader partition in the image and editing the boot config that way...
14:54:43
Shinmera
Also, this is making me regret unlearning qwerty lol
14:59:08
froggey
ok, do this before the mezzano boot command: set "video_mode" "lfb:1024x768"
14:59:32
froggey
it's also messing me up, kboot uses the US qwerty layout
14:59:51
Shinmera
Well I'm used to dvorak :)
15:00:34
froggey
that's a slightly larger difference
15:00:59
Shinmera
programmer dvorak, so not even the digits are in the right place
15:03:12
Shinmera
wohey, I get a desktop
15:03:46
Shinmera
Time to play some DOOM
15:05:14
froggey
do the keyboard & mouse both work? they always cause trouble on new systems
15:06:06
Shinmera
no sound, though I don't think that's in, yet?
15:06:40
froggey
it's in, but SDL doesn't have it wired up
15:06:54
Shinmera
Is there anything I can do to help get the auto-detect working?
15:08:50
froggey
I guess you could dig through the ata spec and figure out exactly how to detect the sector size properly
15:09:20
Shinmera
I think that's a bit beyond my current pain threshold :)
15:10:36
froggey
you could try grabbing the latest master, building it and giving it a try
15:12:25
froggey
actually there's no support for any of the vmware nics, so building world be impossible
15:12:48
Shinmera
that's what I was going to ask about
15:14:02
Shinmera
If I didn't have too much on my plate (or enough helpers to manage it) I would be interested.
15:18:25
Shinmera
Turns out making a game is a big endeavour :)
15:21:23
froggey
yeah. I've been following your blog posts, very interesting stuff
15:21:41
Shinmera
Ah! Glad to hear, thank you! :)
15:22:56
froggey
looks like vbox & vmware both support the Intel 82545EM, so that'll be the one to target. I'll do that... eventually
15:24:33
Shinmera
When are you going to write an Nvidia GPU driver? :V
15:24:50
froggey
pft, when they release docs
15:27:47
froggey
it's a shame the intel gpu on my test machine is so old. intel releases documentation, but it doesn't stretch quite that far back
15:29:51
froggey
I was able to puzzle out the 2D/modesetting side from the available docs, but the 3D side looks totally different. I'm not sure it even supports hardware vertex shaders...
15:30:31
Shinmera
I know fragment shaders are //slow// on intel.
15:47:21
random-nick
does AMD release documentation or do they just release the linux driver and firmware?
15:48:14
froggey
iirc they release quite a bit, enough to do 3D

Hello from the Mezzano IRC application (QEMU/NetBSD 9).
16:05:39
alexshendi
Which network cards are supported on real HW? I managed to run Demo 5 on a Thinkpad X220.
16:06:04
alexshendi
But couldn't get the network working.
