shka_: If you are aiming for a layered design, I suggest you look at CLIM which is a great example of such design. Each layer is defined in terms of one or more protocols, and different implementations can be substituted for each such protocol.

SBCL fails because it claims that a call to mprotect failed with ENOMEM, and I am encouraged to increase max_map_count. What are the consequences of doing that?

if I recall correctly, it causes more memory to be allocated in the kernel to keep track of the mmaps.

No, github.com/chris-taylor/MatLisp doesn't seems the right repo. In github.com/matlisp/ there was a version of https://sourceforge.net/projects/matlisp/ more updated. Also quicklisp and quickdocs reference github.com/matlisp/ that now is unavailable.
