It's purely in Common Lisp and highly configurable. But if you want to configure it your liking you will still have to learn a bit about the X protocol.

on what timeframe are you envisioning this? For the short term and to see what lessons can be learned, maybe trying stumpwm isn't that bad an idea

I used tiling window managers for a while, years ago; stumpwm was one of them, I also used xmonad -- it can be a very nice experience, depending on your typical work flow of course

Well, I have an instant negative reaction to the "tiling" part, but in fact, when I look at how I configure my windows, they correspond to that use case. Now, it is not particularly the windows that I am interested in. It is more the workspace manager (called "groups"?), and also I mentioned all this because I was thinking of an entire "desktop" written in Common Lisp.

beach: StumpWM also supports "floating" windows, which are windows managed like normal window managers.
